Hurst joined DCM as a General Partner in 2006 and has been overseeing the firm’s global strategic planning, management, and investment philosophy. Drawing from his experience as an entrepreneur, Hurst brings a founder’s mindset to venture investments, striving to collaborate with and guide other founders in product strategies, business development opportunities, hiring talent to scale their business, and assisting them to accelerate their path to an IPO thereby allowing these enterprises to become a leading change agent in their industry. Hurst focuses primarily on artificial intelligence & consumer Internet businesses including eCommerce, digital media, online travel, mobile apps, and O2O. Hurst’s investments include decacorn Kuaishou (HK IPO 2021), Luxin (SH IPO 2011), Vipshop (US IPO 2012), 58.com (US IPO 2013), Akulaku (exited), eKuaibao, Hauto, Huochebang (exited), Gigaloud (US IPO 2022), Pharmaron (exited), Udesk, QuantaSing (US IPO 2023), and Yaoshibang (HK IPO 2023). Hurst splits his time equally between making investments in the US and in Asia, primarily China.
Prior to joining DCM, Hurst was the COO and Co-Founder of SINA Corporation (now called Weibo Corp - NASDAQ: WB), the first venture-backed Chinese Internet company to go public in the U.S. Alongside his co-founders, Hurst was instrumental in SINA’s phenomenal growth from a small start-up Internet company into a big, well-known publicly traded technology company. Hurst oversaw SINA’s global business development and M&A activities and was heavily involved in the company’s day-to-day operations as well as major corporate transactions and pre-IPO funding. Prior to SINA, Hurst spent several years in Silicon Valley working as a management consultant at Ernst & Young.
Growing up in the East Coast (more specifically New York City), Hurst attended Dartmouth College in New Hampshire where he received a bachelor’s degree in engineering. For his MBA degree, Hurst decided to move West and attended Stanford’s Graduate School of Business. Hurst is an active member of Stanford and Dartmouth’s Alumni organizations in China. He is also actively involved in entrepreneur organizations such as AAMA and Cyzone. Hurst has been included in Forbes Midas List for several years in a row (2024 being the most recent) as one of the top venture capitalists in the U.S. and in Asia.
